Munazara Metinlerinin Kazılması E-Çalıştayı

In a new installment of the ADAB series, the Munazara and Argumentation Ethics Research center is pleased to host experts in the Munazara and argumentation tradition, Dr. Necmettin Pehlivan, Dr. Recep Şentürk, Dr. Syamsuddin Arif, Seyda Zafer Onur, Dr. Alparslan Açıkgenç and Dr. Rahmi Oruç to review and survey classical Munazara texts this Friday 23rd September at 4 PM (GMT+3) online on Zoom.

Ādāb al-Baḥth wa al-Munāẓara was widely taught and practiced between the 13th and 19th centuries. From the 17th century onwards, the center of the Ottoman Empire became the hub of Munāẓara studies. For this reason, today’s Turkey is arguably the most fitting place to kick-start a comprehensive survey on classical Munāẓara literature. In fact, famous Turkish libraries (such as: Istanbul’s Süleymaniye and Millet, Konya’s Yazma Eserler Kütüphanesi, and Bursa’s Yazma ve Eski Basma Eserler Kütüphanesi), are but a small selection of the different Turkish institutions that have preserved unique copies Munāẓara literature. A cursory search through Turkish library databases yields thousands of manuscripts (original texts, commentaries, and glosses) with “Munāẓara” in their title.

The goal in the activity as conducted by Seyda Zafer Onur is to survey the literature on Munāẓara in different languages and types of documents, including original Munāẓara manuscripts (monographs, commentaries, and glosses), existing editions and English translations, as well as secondary literature on the Munāẓara tradition. While some titles and authors are already known, especially in the secondary literature, there is no systematic inventory of the different types of Munāẓara documents.

After a presentation of the preliminary survey and findings by Seyda Zafer Onur, the eminent discussants will hold a discussion and settle on which texts should be translated as an outcome of the Project and the criteria that will justify this selection.
